Description

Ornate interior of the Jade Buddha Temple.

The Jade Buddha Temple was founded in 1882 with two white-jade Buddha statues that were brought back from Burma (now Myanmar) by a monk who had made a pilgrimage there. During the revolution that led to the overthrow of the Qing dynasty in 1912, the temple was destroyed but fortunately the statues were saved. A new temple was built in 1928. The complex contains many more statues than the original two.
