Pre-flight testing of NASA Stanford McDonnell Douglas Blended Wing Body BWB-17 at NASA Ames

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This contact sheet is dated June 6, 1997. Location is NASA Ames. Shown is pre-flight testing of a dynamically scaled, 17-ft span, radio-controlled, computer-mediated, blended wing body (BWB) model built by Ben Tigner, a post-doctoral candidate at Stanford University. The model is called BWB-17. Tigner was assisted by Prof. Ilan Kroo, NASA and McDonnell-Douglas (MDC). The team on this day is shown in Frame 5 from left to right: Mark Page (MDC), Mark Meyers (Stanford), Bill Watson (pilot), Ben Tigner (Stanford), and Peter Sturdza (Stanford). Testing includes car-top testing at flight speeds on a gimbal mount (Frames 2, 3, and 6), static thrust measurement (Frames 7 - 10), and static flight testing on a gimbal in the wind (Frames 11 and 12). The gimbal mount attaches to the model's center of gravity.
