Especial 200 anos do Senado Federal

Pintura de Johann Moritz Rugendas:

O Período Regencial foi um dos mais turbulentos e violentos da história do Brasil. A falta de legitimidade dos regentes, a centralização política no Rio de Janeiro e a escolha dos governadores pelo governo central sem a participação das elites locais gerou instabilidade e uma série de revoltas pelo Brasil. A Balaiada foi uma delas. Ocorrida no Maranhão entre os anos de 1838 e 1841, a revolta iniciou a partir de um simples fabricante de balaios Manuel Francisco dos Anjos - o "Balaio", que teve uma das suas filhas estuprada por um policial sem que houvesse nenhuma punição.
