| Description |
English: As seen on a July 2015 morning: the centerpiece of St. George's Square in Guelph, Ontario, Canada - one of the relatively few sections of that city's downtown business district that does not consist of Victorian-era heritage architecture executed in native cream-colored limestone - is The Family, a bronze fountain sculpture by Hamilton-based artist William McElcheran that's located at the northwest corner of Wyndham Street North and Quebec Street. A joyous depiction of a father and mother holding a baby aloft that was intended to commemorate the immigrant experience, the sculpture was unveiled in 1985 and was initially a point of local controversy due to the figures' nudity, which in this relatively conservative city was seen as unfit for display in a public place. The fountain is also notorious as the site of the discovery of a still-unidentified murder victim in 2015. |
