English: A panoramic view along the southeast shore of Flowerpot Island (part of Fathom Five National Marine Park in Ontario, Canada) takes in both of the rock formations that give this 490-acre spot of land in Lake Huron its name: the Large Flowerpot to the left, and the Small one to the right. These pillars of rock were carved out of the cliffs at the edge of the island through a combination of two processes: first, thousands of years of erosion by waves, ice, and wind; second, the receding of the lake's water level after the most recent Ice Age. The "flowerpots" are made up of a capstone of more resistant limestone which overlays a shaft of dolomite, a softer type of rock that dissolves more readily in water (hence the typical profile; wider at the top and gradually narrowing as you go down). As the lake levels have receded further, more rock at the base is exposed and eroded, and the "flowerpots" gradually increase in height relative to the surface. In the further distance at left, the Tobermory Frontier ferries a load of passengers back to the mainland, while the smaller and more remote Bears Rump Island is seen on the even further horizon.
