| Description |
English: Centre Street (Ontario Highway 6) is the main drag of Espanola, Ontario, Canada; here it is seen in July 2015 looking southeast from just past the corner of Tudhope Street at the north end of downtown. Along with the Spanish River that flows through it, Espanola is said to take its name from an encounter by the region's earliest white explorers with a tribe of Spanish-speaking Ojibwe people, which they apparently learned from a captive Spanish woman in their midst. Somewhat counterintuitively, however, it now figures among the most heavily Francophone communities in Ontario. |
