Description

208-PU-272-B-58: Mayflower To See Service With the Coast Guard. Rear Admiral Flex X. Gygax, Commandant of the Norfolk Navy Yard, discusses the history of the former yacht Mayflower during the commissioning of her for service in the Coast Guard.

This will be the third war in which the Mayflower has participated. In the Spanish-=American War, the vessel served as a dispatch boat during the Havana blockade, and took part in the capture of the Spanish vessel Santiago Apostle. During the the first World War, the Mayflower operated as a patrol ship out of Norfolk, Virginia. She was renamed USS Butte, and transferred on September 6, 1943, to the Coast Guard.
