| Description | Summer Saturdays were often deemed to be the best times for loco hauled travel on the old BR network. Traditionally summer holidays were booked Saturday to Saturday meaning increased levels of rail traffic to many seaside resorts around the country. Skegness was one such destination and as a result used to see lengthy rakes of Mark 1 stock hauled by pairs of Class 20s. These trains all originated in the East Midlands area and as a result Toton depot would supply locos which would otherwise be idle over the weekend as there was rarely any freight traffic. Lack of train heating was not a problem and their maximum speed of 75mph was more than adequate for the line. Seen here at the buffer-stops at Skegness on 24 July 1984 are 20183 (closest to camera) and 20075 on 1E86 08:16 Leicester to Skegness. |
