Blazon

• Shield: Per fess enhanced Gules and Or, in chief an arrow barbed with a fleur-de-lis of the last and in base six gunstones.
• Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Alabama Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Gules, a slip of cotton plant with full bursting boll, Proper.
• Motto: "In Vigilantia Spes" (In Valor, there is Hope)

Symbolism

• Shield: Red and yellow are used for Artillery.  The fleur-de-lis headed arrow symbolizes the organization’s assault landing in the Southern France campaign and its function of antiaircraft artillery.  The gunstones, ancient symbol of artillery, represent the unit’s other six campaigns in Europe during World War II.
• Crest: The crest is that of the Alabama Army National Guard.

Background

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 108th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion (Automatic Weapons) on 6 May 1955.  It was redesignated for the 278th Artillery Regiment on 13 December 1960.
