Summary[edit]

Description 330-PS-6617 (USN 709159): Blades of the largest anchor ever built by the U.S. Navy are measured at about 12 feet long by WAVES Storekeeper Seaman Frances Gand (kneeling) and Seaman Apprentice Iris Mae Bixby at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Foundry, Portsmouth, Virginia. Two of the 60,000-pound giants will be installed on the U.S. Navy’s latest aircraft carriers USS Forrestal and USS Saratoga. Overall length of the anchors when shafts are attached will be about 22 feet. Photograph released March 30, 1954. (4/7/2015).
