Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PSA-110-65 (USN 1111206C): Arlis II personnel load sleds with supplies as they prepare to evacuate the ice island which had been manned for four years during a 5,000 mile journey through the Arctic. Master Caption: The U.S. Navy icebreaker USS Edisto (AGB-2), which evacuated 19 men from the Navy’s Floating Arctic Research Ice Island in the Greenland Sea, May 8-9, 1965, arrived at Boston after her rescue. The Ice Island, about two miles long and one and one-half miles wide, had been manned since May 1961, when it was located about 130 miles north of Point Barrow, Alaska. The island was evacuated 200 miles northeast of Iceland after a 5,000 mile journey through Arctic waters. Arlis II traveled farther into the Greenland Sea than any other manned ice island. Scientists aboard conducted experiments in the fields of geophysics, marine biology, ice formation and oceanography. Photograph released May 19, 1965. (2015/11/10).
