Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PSA-117-61 (USN 710902): XKD2B-1 Training Target Makes Successful Launch. An artist’s conception of the nation’s first missile training target developed with speed an altitude performance to match the capabilities of the latest enemy aircraft. This supersonic, expendable target, officially called the XKD2B-1, was successfully launched at 3 p.m. (Pacific Time) at the Naval Missile Center, Point Mugu, California, May 31, 1961. Specifically designed for air-to-air and surface-to-air missile training, the XKD25-1 simulates the speed, altitude, and radar appearance of enemy aircraft. The new missile target will be capable of level flight at any predetermined altitude from 5,000 to 70,000 feet and at twice the speed of sound. A self-contained guidance system takes the target to its preset altitudes and speeds for fighter pilot training problems. When in operational use, the target will have a hit or miss scoring system, a self destruct system and will operate in all climatic environments. Photograph released June 1, 1961. (9/22/2015).
