Description 330-PSA-204-PS (USN 710968): Commander Malcom D. Ross, USNR, (left), is congratulated September 21 by Rear Admiral Leonidas D. Coates, Jr., USN, Chief of Naval Research, shortly after receiving a Gold Star in Lieu of Second Distinguished Flying Cross. Commander Ross received the award for his record breaking balloon flight of May 5 which went to 113,733 feet, highest man has reached in a balloon flight. Admiral Coates presented the award at a meeting of the Navy Research Company held at the National Academy of Sciences. Photograph released September 25, 1961. (9/22/2015).
