Description
English: 330-PS-6748 (111-SC-1500221): These six photographs show the effect of acceleration on Lieutenant Colonel John P. Stapp while riding in a rocket-propelled test sled at Holloman Air Force Base. Pictures 1-3 show the first five seconds of acceleration as the sled shot up to 421 mph., subjecting the Colonel to a force of 12 G’s. Pictures 4-6 show the initial deceleration caused by the lack of thrust after the rockets burned out and test sled entering the water brake. The deceleration force accounted to 22 GIs. The tests were part of an Air Research and Development Command study to determine effects on flyers bailing out at high altitudes and supersonic speeds. Later tests expect to carry volunteers up to 800 mph. Photograph released June 1954. (3/15/2015).
