Summary
[edit]Description700-704 S Front Philly.JPG |
English: A rather amazing photo (or at least location) if I do say so myself. From the right (north), the 3 buildings all have addresses on South Front Street in Philadelphia, originally on the frontage of the Delaware River
700 - Widow Maloby's Tavern NRHP ref 72001175 702 -Capt. Thomas Moore House NRHP ref 72001165, built by Nathaniel Irish 704 -Nathaniel Irish House NRHP ref 72001160, built by Nathaniel Irish These are among the oldest surviving houses in Philadelphia, being built in the 1760s, and are extensively documented. The entire block 700-712 is listed as an NRHP historic district ref 72001171 This is also part of the much larger Southwark Historic District ref 72001172. Why they included one historic district inside another is unknown, but may be related to the ease of describing the larger district's borders, which are quite straightforward. Photos are also available from HABS, but they are B&W and dated 1961. If you want to get a better photo (clearly possible), I suggest you arrive very early in the morning (parking is heavy in the area, and the buildings face straight east) and going in the Fall or Winter and getting very close will likely also help as there are many trees that tend to get in the way. One tree may have been recently removed. |
