Summary[edit]

Description 80-CF-882-2_Box 175: Original caption, “First African-Americans Sworn in for Clerical Service.” Walter Hurtt, accompanied by his father Wyoming Hurtt, gets enlistment data at U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, 67 Broad Street, New York. Hurtt was one of the first African-Americans to apply under the Navy’s new rule allowing African-Americans to enlist in other than mess attendant’s capacity. U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives (2015/11/24). Note, this photograph has not been fully verified.
