Summary[edit]

Description 80-G-1037290: Sea Legs, a 5-ton experimental hydrofoil craft developed by Gibbs and Cox Inc of New York, is currently undergoing tests by the Navy’s Bureau of Ships. Sea Legs is shown going through her paces on the Anacostia River, Washington, D.C., fitted with two fully submerged foils, one forward and one aft. The craft reaches speeds in excess of 25 miles per hour. A high performance autopilot controls the position of the boat and foils. The control system includes a height sensing device, integrating gyros, accelerometers, servo-mechanisms and electronic units. The primary purpose of the boat is to test the control and foil system.
