Description

80-G-43638: Crew of German submarine U-664 prepare to go over side of ship during attack by two Avenger aircraft from USS Card (CVE 11), August 9, 1943. Note, the laughing sawfish insignia on the conning tower of the 9th U-boat Flotilla. (8/18/2015).

Hans Kossatz's drawing of a laughing sawfish (lachender Sägefisch) was taken from the Berlin magazine Erika – Die frohe Zeitung für Front und Heimat. It was painted as the mascot emblem on the German submarine U-96, and from 1942 became the symbol for the 9th U-boat Flotilla (9. Unterseebootsflottille).
