Description

Looking NNE from 27th St. at McAlpine Locks. Swing span over heads of 600-foot and 360-foot locks is in position to allow vehicles to cross. Note remnants of railroad tracks in foreground. When this bridge was built in 1926 (replacing an earlier, lighter bridge), it had railroad tracks as well as a road surface. The tracks were built to facilitate the transportation of construction equipment to the site of Dam 41 (replacing an earlier dam) and the LG&E hydroelectric plant, both of which were completed in 1927.
