A bas-relief of Padmavatidevi with lion, parrot and devotees at Chitaral

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The above bas-relief is of Padmavati Devi on the north side outer wall of the rock cut cave temple. She stands in a padmasana pose. Behind her is a lion with his open face to her right. A devotee with offerings in a bowl in her left hand stands to the right of Padmavati's legs. On the right side are two short male reverential figures. The goddess is depicted with her right arm bent, in which sits a parrot. Many of these iconographic elements, and particularly the lion, mirrors those for Durga (Bhagavati) in the Hindu pantheon.

Chitral or Chitharal rock cut Jain Bhagavati temple is located on top of granite rock (Triuchcharanattu malai) in a village situated north of NH 66 and SH 90, west of SH 3 highways in Tamil Nadu.

The site is ancient, and consists of Jain beds and two monuments. The beds are the oldest, dated to 1st-century BCE through 6th-century CE. The rock cut cave temples are from the 9th-century.

The second monument is a Hindu Bhagavati temple. A mandapa and masonry ceiling was added in 13th to 14th century. The temple walls, steps, nearby rocks, and flat square sections of some pillar have Tamil inscriptions in Vatteluthu (rounded) script. These mark donations by Jain merchants, Hindu kings and other patrons over the centuries to either construction or maintenance of the temple.
