English: The Chinese had blown a critical bridge halfway down Funchilin Pass where water flowed downward from Changjin Reservoir and passed through four giant pipes called “penstocks.” As early as 4 December, Major General Smith knew that this 24-foot gap would have to be bridged if his vehicles were to reach Hungnam.
