Summary[edit]

Description

This is the cramped cockpit of a mighty British cold war bomber that had poor forward visibility (which only became known by the public years later)

Fortunately they were never used in their nuclear attack role but just before being retired, in 1982, some were used to drop "conventional" bombs on Port Stanley airfield in the Falkland Islands after Argentine forces had invaded.

The Vulcan had performance and agility more akin to a fighter than a conventional bomber, particularly at great height, and had 4 Rolls-Royce Olympus engines - an early version of the engines that later powered Concorde. Such was the development of the Olympus engine that each Concorde engine had more power than two Vulcan engines.

After retiral almost all were scrapped or placed in museums, but one -XH558- was brought back into flying condition by public subscriptions, the support of a variety of companies and the National Lottery. I have just uploaded a photo of XH558 in it's original hanger at Doncaster.

Over a number of years it entertained hundreds of thousands of spectators and was considered to me one of the main attractions at Air Shows despite it's age. (They first flew in 1952)

Sadly it's now longer able to fly but a few examples of the type are dotted round the UK (and beyond),
