Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In 2008 I first noticed an elegant black and grey information sign outside Highbury and Islington station. With another one near the Islington Magistrate's Court in Highbury.

Strong similarity was unmistakable with the obelisk (monolith?) in the film: "2001 a Space Odyssey", as imagined by Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick

Orchestrated in the movie with the music of György Ligeti and Richard Strauss - but not at Highbury Corner - pavement humanity was offered the opportunity to make an evolutionary leap by the use of local maps and directional instructions.

Only nine years later we see amazing technical change all around us. Or we might notice if we put away the immensely powerful personal mini-obelisks which everyone must now carry. And to which we pay constant attention. Of course, when the mobile phone grid goes down, Haringey's dark blue Kubrick will still be there.

§ Arthur C. Clarke's short story: The Sentinel.

§ If there's a moment of silence, look at your phone. And if you don't know what to say, you can look at your phone. There's no point looking around, everyone's looking down, Look at your phone, Look at your phone, Look at your phone. What you gonna do when the grid goes down? Do you have a plan for yourself for when the grid goes down? Will you be all alone just staring at that cold, dead phone, In an apartment, in West Covina? Ooh, you have to check it. You could have some messages, from someone far away, Someone with something to say." — Karen Kilgariff: "Look at Your Phone".

§ Another song from Karen Kilgariff.
