Summary

[edit]
Description We are almost there now, and this is a far view of the Itsukushima shrine off the Hiroshima coast in Japan. Extending from the sides of the haraiden (main hall in Shinto Buddhist temples) of the main shrine is a noh (traditional Japanese masked drama with dance and song, evolved from Shinto rites) stage which dates from 1590. Noh theatre performances have long been used to pay homage to the gods through the ritual acting out of key events in Shinto myth. On September 5, 2004, the shrine was severely damaged by Typhoon Songda. The boardwalks and roof were partially destroyed, and the shrine was temporarily closed for repairs. Today anyone can go visit the shrine for only 300 yen. Itsukushima jinja was the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) of Aki Province during the heydays of the Itsukushima shrine.
