This set of silos dispenses cement -- is in active use. The silos to the west are the remainder of two sets of grain silos, that were abandoned decades ago. Squatters lived in them for decades.
This is the stern of a lake freighter, moored in the channel to the portland's turning basin. The black berm behind the vessel is rubber covering a long mound of something -- possibly sand, gravel or road salt.
This is a corner of a recently constructed movie sound stage. It is said to be the largest sound stage in Canada.
These trailers are new. The seven acre parcel of land on the north side of the outlet to the Keating Channel was abandoned for decades. About ten years ago, for well over a year, it was the site of a tent city, where over one hundred homeless squatters made their homes. After decades of neglect ferns and small trees provided privacy. Some squatters had built huts. Others lived in tents. The parcel was, at one time, going to be the site of a home depot. When Toronto was bidding for the 2010 Olympics the plans included building atheletes housing here. I think there are plans to develop housing for the atheletes for the 2015 Panam games here. The westtern portion of the site was leveled a few months ago -- presumable to prepare for construction.
This is the bow of a vessel used to convey raw cement to the silo east of here. There are a number of vessels that bring raw cement to this silo, and one south of here. They are about a third the size of the larger lake freigthers.
This set of grain silos has been disused since, at least, the early 1970s. It used to have a structure, on top, adding about three or four storeys. Squatters who had lived there for decades scaled the outside of that structure and painted a large rooster. Apparently this was known as "the rooster squat" among Toronto's homeless.
