Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Panch Kedar is a historic Hindu tirtha (pilgrimage) mentioned in pre-5th century texts. They consist of five Shiva temple complexes, located near the sources of the famed rivers of north India. The Panch Kedar were connected to the plains with hiking trails with pilgrim facilities such as mandapa (choultries), community kitchens, smaller temple groups along the way built by Himalayan Hindu kingdoms nearby as well as other regions such as the Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha and others. These pilgrim stop points emerged as small towns and villages over time. The temple groups are dedicated to Shiva, Durga, Ganesha, Vishnu, Surya, and other deities of Hinduism.

The most famous of the Panch Kedar is the Kedarnath temple.

In addition to Panch Kedar, Uttarakhand has many other famed pilgrimages whose routes partly overlap. These include the Panch Badri, the Panch Prayag, the Char Dham, and others.
