Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This temple is dedicated to Parasurama, the Brahmin-Kshatriya avatar of Vishnu. Inside this Thiruvallam Kerala temple complex are many shrines dedicated to deities of the Vaishnavism, Shaivism and Shaktism tradition of Hinduism. The Vedic deity Brahma, along with Shiva and Vishnu are included in the temple.

The Parasurama shrine is the oldest of the shrines with an apsidal vimana, one of many Hindu temple architecture models found in 1st millennium Hindu texts on temple design. The most important shrines in the temple complex are dedicated to Parasurama, Brahma, Shiva, Matsyamurti, Subramanian and Veda Vyasa (the attributed author of several major Hindu epics and purana texts).

The temple shrines are mostly standard square plan with Vimana (such as the one above) with a square sanctum, but also include one that is circular with a conical spire with a square sanctum. Some rock walls have Hindu inscriptions in Vatteluttu (Vattezhuthu) script, probably from 12th to 14th-century.
