| Description |
English: In June 2012 Raghu (then working with NCF) and I went on a three day trek from Ayyanar koil in Rajaplayam hills to Shenbagathoppu in Srivilliputhur hills, past Neeravi, Kambathu mottai (c.4000 feet), spent a night in Spring Heavan an abandoned cardamom estate of late Bose family of Sivakasi, abandoned Dr. Kadu Estate (4800 feet), Thamaraipallam (ca. 5000 feet), had a view of Peimalai mottai from a distance (great tahr habitat, had climbed in May 1976 ), Veilankal mottai (c. 4700 feet, took the first picture of a female tahr, first picture for the area in May 1976), descended to Sithattukavu, had our packed lunch in Moolakeni (c.4000 feet), reached Mudaliar oothu (c, 3000 feet, spent a night there) and descended to Shenbagathoppu. The trek is written in detail in Walking the Western Ghats, chapter 5.
The picture of Megamalai Ghats was taken from Kambathumottai. We all know that Srivilliputhur-Megamalai will form the 5th Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu. Initial plan for this Reserve was written by our Shekhar Niraj, present CWLW. |
