an explanation of the distinction between different ranks by the insignia on the uniforms; right, a key, A-I, K-O, to the flags of the admirals and commodores; bottom, below the representations of ships, a list in 12 columns of the names, numbers of guns and men, of each ship in the British fleet: Names of the Ships.

The George III catalogue entry refers to the depictions of the different rates of ships as 'plans'; they are profile views, each flying the flags of admirals, or Vice-, Rear Admirals, or commodores of the White, Blue, or Red. The views of the different type of ship are accompanied by four depictions of uniformed officers: admiral, captain, lieutenant, and midshipman.
