Summary[edit]
DescriptionAbednego Bishop, Mayor of West Ham County Borough . Dedication stone, 1901.jpg |
English: Abednego Bishop, Mayor of West Ham CBC, E15, 1901. Born Worle, nr Weston-super-Mare, Somerset 1838, died West Ham May 16, 1917. In 1881, Plasterer employing 10 men, living at 1 Victoria Villas, Essex St, Forest Gate.
Abednego , a biblical name which has gone out of fashion, unlike Joshua or Daniel for instance. Abednego literally servant of Nebo, was one of three young men, in the book of Daniel , who were brought to the court of King Nebuchadnezzar. Lewis Angell was the borough engineer who was finally ousted in 1899 when left leaning and progressive councillors set up a direct works department as given here. Odd then that he is given as the architect of this 1901 building. The mystery can perhaps be solved by Pevsner, which gives Angell as the architect of the 1884 building which was extended in 1901 by John G Morley who became successor to Angell as Borough Engineer.. Angell himself designed the old Town Hall in Broadway, just round the corner from West Ham Lane. The municipal borough of West Ham was formed in 1886, becoming a county borough in 1889. The Goodmayes Hospital Asylum (but from 1898) for the County Borough of West Ham has a similar plaque The extension was built by William Gregar & Son, a local firm, (d 1899). of 1 Grove Crescent. His son, Wm B Gregar b. 1858 carried on the business. In 1901 he and his wife were living at 76 Cranmer Road, an agreeable street in Forest Gate off Capel Road on his death. Probate granted to his wife, Selina Bishop, Walter Bishop, RN and Mabel House, wife of George Edward House. [his daughter] Effects £7878 6s 2d. His wife died 10 years later aged 87, with no probate.
