DescriptionAbraham Heights by George Edmund Butler (29389274703).jpg |
On 4 October 1917 Abraham Heights east of Ypres was taken by the New Zealand Division amid rain wind and appalling terrain. Private Ewen McLaren, a former tailor from Oamaru, described the experience as one of the worst he had been involved in, as the men struggled through bogs and shell holes. The only good thing about the day was that enemy shells were exploding relatively harmlessly in wet mud and he estimated that thousands less men were killed than would have been in dry conditions. “The main track leading to the battlefield was a sight I will never forget … Broken guns and limbers could be seen everywhere, others were overturned while many were sunk almost out of sight in the mud. Dead men and dying horses and mules were strewn all along the line … Occasionally a shell would land under a team and horses and men would go up in the air - a horrible sight …” Shown here is a painting of Abraham Heights by official war artist George Edmund Butler.
