Brieftext:
Im Osten, am 31. Juli 1943.
z. Zt. Brudowo (an der
Eisenbahnlinie Polozk-
Newel) [Anm.: Newel (Oblast Pskow); Polozk = Polazk; russ. Wikipedia: Брудово (Невельский район) - 55°50′18″ N; 29°30′57″ O; Oblast Pskow]

Meine innigstgeliebte Hedwig [Anm.: seine Ehefrau],
meine lieben, guten Kinder
Rosemarie und Peter!
Wenn Euch dieser Brief
erreicht, dann werde ich vielleicht
nicht mehr unter den Lebenden
weilen. Deshalb möchte ich Euch
vor allem ans Herz legen,
seid tapfer, meine Lieben, und
ertragt den großen Schmerz
den Euch mein Hinscheiden be-
reitet, mit Würde und Stolz.
Das Leben muß trotz allem
weiter gehen, und die Zeit
heilt schließlich doch einmal
diese schwere Stunde. Das
Wesentliche ist schließlich doch,
daß men Tod nicht umsonst war
und dazu beigetragen hat Euch
von den Schrecken des Krieges
