English: Achilles and Penthesilea
This relief from the Sebasteion shows Achilles holding the dying Amazon Queen, Penthesilea. Penthesilea arrived at Troy to join the side of the Trojans fairly late in the battle, after Achilles had already killed Hector. Like Achilles (who was the son of the Greek hero/king Peleus and the nymph Thetis), Pehthesilea was a demi-goddess -- her mother was the Amazon Queen Otrera and her father was the god of War, Ares. Penthesilea killed many great Greek warriors in battle but fell to Achilles, who slew her even after she was down and asked for mercy. After her death, Achilles regretted his rash act since he had fallen in love with her, both because she was a kindred warlike spirit and because of her great beauty. After her death, the Amazons withdrew from the battle. Penthesilea was said to be the last of the great Amazon warrior queen |
