Summary[edit]

Description

Lame duck Mayor Rahm Emanuel and outgoing aldermen have voted to go ahead with a 2.6 billion dollar giveaway of taxpayers money to two wealthy developers, Sterling Bay and Related Midwest. Sterling Bay is responsible for the Lincoln Yards development. Related Midwest is working on another development project called "The 78".

Activists say this money should go to fully funding the city's cash strapped schools and neighborhood improvements, not using taxpayer money to subsidize already wealthy developers. Worries about gentrification is another issue. Area residents fear that rents will rise, affordable housing will disappear, and that they will be pushed out of neighborhoods they have lived in for years.

Schools could hire more teachers and staff. there could be smaller class sizes, more librarians, social workers, and nurses. More bilingual and special education teachers and paraprofessionals. There could be fair wages, healthcare and other benefits.

But the aldermen making up the city council felt otherwise. They talk about more jobs and better conditions for business, but the neighborhoods, especially the black and brown areas, continue to be neglected and deteriorate.
