Summary[edit]

Description

Agate in chert in the Permian of Wyoming, USA.

Chert is a cryptocrystalline, quartzose sedimentary rock. It can occur as bedded chert or as nodules or nodule horizons. Chert can also partially replace rocks - often limestone.

Seen here is a dark-colored chert mass eroded from the Permian-aged Rex Chert Member of the Phosphoria Formation in Wyoming. The lighter-colored areas in the chert are true agate - irregularly-concentric layers of chalcedony (= microscopic fibrous quartz) that fill former cavities.

Stratigraphy: float from the Rex Chert Member, Phosphoria Formation, Roadian Stage to Wordian Stage, lower Guadalupian Series, mid-Permian

Locality: roadcut on the northern side of Route 26/Route 89 at the town of Astoria Hot Springs, Snake River Canyon, southern Teton County, northwestern Wyoming, USA
