Aizanoi Roman bath 3rd century

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Probably in the second half of the third century AD, a second bath was built into a sturdy edifice of large limestone blocks that was already standing in the northeastern part of the city. One of the halls of this bath contains a well-preserved mosaic floor displaying a satyr and a maenad in the centre. Some time after the fourth or fifth century AD, the main hall of the bath complex was once more rebuilt in order to serve as the seat for the newly appointed bishop and head of the early Christian municipality of Aizanoi (text at site). On the foreground: the frigidarium, with its cold plunge-bath. Large ones were also swimming pools. Usually situated on the north side of the baths complex; sometimes the water was kept cold by using snow or ice, brought in from nearby mountains.
