Share issued in 1838 by the Electro-Magnetic Company founded by Charles Thomas Jackson for the purpose of realizing his invention of an electromagnetic writing telegraph.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Charles Thomas Jackson studied physics under the famous scientist Claude Servais Mathias Pouillet in Paris. In 1832, he sailed on a ship from Le Havre to New York. During the ship's voyage, he demonstrated various electrical devices, including an electromagnet, to fellow passengers on deck. In the audience was Samuel F.B. Morse, with whom he discussed the possibilities of using electricity for long-distance communications. Morse, who was an occasional painter at the time, built the first Morse apparatus in 1837, which he patented in 1840. Jackson, who was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1837, always claimed to be the true inventor of the writing telegraph. This share from 1838 suggests that Jackson was right.
