World's Record Broken. Championship Skating Races Held at Montreal. Montreal, February 6, 1897. The ninth annual race meeting of the amateur Skating association of Canada, in connection with which is being held the world's championship races, amateur and professional, was begun yesterday and was favored will the best of weather. The ice was the best that any of the most exacting experts could ask for. There was a slight east wind, which was against the flyers. In the 500 meters international amateur race Alfred Naess succeeded in equaling the world's record of 4G 4 5 seconds. The 5.000 meters and the throe mile professional races will be skated again at Montreal, as an error occurred in the scoring, due to the fact that the metric system is entirely new on this side of the Atlantic. The half mile backward race for the championship of Canada also saw a record broken. There were over 3,000 patrons present. Following are the results:

  • Second pair Tom Moore, M. A. A. first: W. H. Merrltt, St. John B. and A. C. second. Time, 50 4 5 seconds. Merritt's time not taken.
  • Third pair Julius Sayler. Davos, Switzerland, first; J. Davison, Montreal, second. Time, seconds, GO 1 5 seconds.
  • Fourth pair Alfred Naess, Christiania, Norway, first: J. K. McCulloch, Rover B. Winnipeg, second. Time. 46 4 5 seconds. 4S 1 5 seconds.
  • Fifth pair M. Lordahl, Christiana, first; Y. A. E. Pilkle, Tecumseh L. Toronto, second. Time, 30 3 3 seconds. 53 2 3 seconds.
  • One mile professional: first pair Olaf A. Rudd. Minneapolis, first; W. Letts, Hoboken, N. second. Time. 2:40 2 0. 2 5.
  • Third pair John Nilsson, Minneapolis, first; 1 1. P. Mosher. Storm King, N. second. Time, 2:411 5. Mosher tell and was out the race.
