Allard Pierson Museum Dionysus sarcophagus

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The relief shows Dionysus or Bacchus, god of wine, with his retinue of satyrs and maenads (ecstatic women). Dionysus and his followers were regularly depicted on coffins. As the personifications of wine he is crushed in the grapes and reborn into wine, thus symbolizing life after death. The lion’s heads with the rings are imitations of the bronze rings on wooden coffins. The sarcophagus was made in Rome and stayed there until the beginning of the 20th century. The travertine lion’s legs were probably added in the 16th century. The lid has been lost.

In the early 20th century the sarcophagus was transported to England and placed in the gardens of Hever Castle, where exposure to the elements caused further wear. In 1983 bought as a gift for the museum.

Marble, Rome, early 3rd century AD. APM 10.854
Marmer, Rome, begin 3e eeuw AD. APM 10.854
