With reality increasingly grim for the Mughal dynasty in the 19th century, painters were called upon to reconstruct a more glorious time. Here Ghulam Ali Khan, painting during the last years of the Mughal dynasty, resorts to allegory to describe the noble lineage and grand mission of the emperor Jahangir (ruled 1605-1627) to combat injustice. Poised on the world (conjured up in a very generalized map) that is set on the back of an elephant standing atop a fish, Jahangir has let loose one arrow into the mouth and neck of a severed head, and pulls back his bow to fire another. Above, heavenly messengers in the form of putti are ready to supply him with more. Owls and a whip are aligned with the pole supporting the head. Suspended between the world and the place of sentence is a line of bells, like those would be rung to register a complaint with the emperor during his morning public appearance at the window.
