The statue was created by Pieter-Jan Braecke, an artist from Nieuwpoort. Originally it belonged to the National Bank of Belgium. In 1955 it was given to Nieuwpoort. The statue represents a putto, acting like the guardian angel of the Belgian franc. The putto, dressed as a Roman soldier, and the Belgian lion protect the money and cash book of the BNB (Banque Nationale National Bank), wrapped by an olive branch.
