Description
English: Founder's Stock (Subscriber Certificate) of the Alliance Marine Insurance Company for 50 shares of £100 each, issued in London on 31 January 1825, originally signed by Nathan M. Rothschild as President of the Company. The illustration on the right shows the reverse side of the share. Founded in 1824 as a sister company of the Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Co. Initiators were Nathan Meyer Rothschild and his brother-in-law Sir Moses Montefiore, 1st Baronet. The company was set up to underwrite maritime risks previously declined by Lloyd's. Lloyd's was also one of the company's largest shareholders. 1906 Merged with Alliance Insurance. 1959 Merged with Sun Insurance Co. which in turn merged with Royal Insurance Co. in 1996 to form Royal & Sun Alliance, which has traded as RSA Insurance Group since 2008.
