Summary

[edit]
Description

Altocumulus cloud often have a rippled morphology (usually referred to as "rolls"). This appearance is due to differential cloud development at a disturbed air-air interface.

Disturbances at air-water interfaces are called oceanic waves. Below sea level, disturbances at water-water interfaces are called internal waves. Up in the air, disturbances at air-air interfaces are called atmospheric waves. The cloud "rolls" are developed in the troughs of atmospheric waves. The gaps represent the locations of the wave crests.
