Description
English: Amphibolite from the Ordovician of North Carolina, USA.

Amphibolite is a dark-colored metamorphic rock dominated by amphibole. It is usually weakly foliated but can be crystalline-textured. Amphibolites are principally composed of hornblende amphibole and plagioclase feldspar. Many amphibolites form by metamorphism of basalt or gabbro (= mafic igneous rocks).

The rock seen here is from North Carolina's Chunky Gal Complex and has two types of amphibole, colored blackish and greenish. Rubies (red corundum) can occur in these rocks, but none are present here. This material is metamorphosed Proterozoic oceanic crust. Regional metamorphism occurred in the Ordovician, during the Taconic Orogeny, at about 458 million years ago.
