English: My scan of the back of a still working unaltered original Macintosh (serial # 5132).
I have another still working unaltered original Macintosh (serial # 2336). The original Macintosh was a little different than the later Macintosh 128k introduced mid September 1984 with a slightly different ROM and 400k Sony Drive electronics. The first 6000 were in the dealerships when sold on introduction in January 1984. Unfortunately due to lack of internal cooling which was later introduced on the Macintosh SE,early compact Macs as they are called tended to overheat usually causing capacitor failure on the analog board. Failure rates on early Macs would reach 90% over their lifetime due to this problem which was called the dying Mac syndrome. Another problem with the original Macintosh was that over time the grease would harden on the original Sony 400k microdisk drive. Many original Mac's were also upgraded with Macintosh 512k electronics internally. In addition others were either user modified with higher capacity RAM chips or were modified by 3rd parties with an expansion board. Very few original Mac's probably still exist in operational stock condition and many perhaps were discarded due to obsolescence. I demonstrated one of these at the Lakewood Washington U.S.A. Macintosh User Group in 2002. |
