| Description |
English: Ancient funerary steles in Timgad, Batna Province, Algeria (head part). The synthesis of the motif of equestrian deities and that of Sol and Luna. On either side of the "god with the 'harpè'", and in the classic attitude and movement of the Dioscuri holding their mounts by the bit, to the right of the god, a naked young man, whose head radiates seven rays and who is thus no longer the Tyndarid, but Sol cavalier, and, to the left of the god, a young woman, dressed to the ankles in a tightly belted talaric robe and whose face is framed between the rising horns of a large lunar crescent. Here, Magurla "with the lantern" has become, without much effort of transposition, the Sol whose imperial policy exalted the cult; as for Luna, it has resolutely changed gender, it has turned into Luna. But the fundamental theme offered by the equestrian deities has been preserved, while a mutation of the gender of the "moon god" has explained its meaning, becoming inaccessible to most believers. On y voit, de part et d'autre du « dieu à la « harpè », et dans l'attitude et le mouvement classiques de Dioscures tenant leurs montures au mors, à la droite du dieu, un jeune homme nu, dont la tête irradie sept rayons et qui est ainsi non plus le Tyndaride, mais Sol cavalier, et, à la gauche du dieu, une jeune femme, vêtue jusqu'aux chevilles d'une robe talaire serrée à la taille et dont le visage s'encadre entre les cornes montantes d'un large croissant lunaire Ici, Magurla « à la lanterne » est devenu, sans grand effort de transposition, le Sol dont la politique impériale exaltait le culte; quant à luna, il a résolument changé de genre, il s'est mué en Luna. Mais le thème fondamental offert par les divinités cavalières a été sauvegardé, en même temps qu'une mutation du sexe du « dieu lune » en a expliqué le sens, devenu inaccessible au plus grand nombre des croyants?. » |
