English: Portrait of Guidobaldo II della Rovere (1514-1574), formerly identified as Ippolito de' Medici (1511-1535)
Italiano: "Il Vasari nella vita del Pontormo ricorda un ritratto d'Ippolito de' Medici con "un cane così proprio e naturale che pare vivissimo". In base a tale concordanza iconografica quest'opera è stata a lungo ritenuta il ritratto di Ippolito de' Medici dipinto dal Pontormo. In antico l'inventario del 1638 l'attribuiva al Barocci. Fu Justi ad assegnarlo al Bronzino e a riconoscere nella persona ritratta Guidobaldo Della Rovere. Tale identificazione appare avvalorata dalla sigla D.G.B. (duca Guido Baldo) che si legge sul retro della tavola e dell'armatura di fattura lombarda per attendere l'arrivo della quale, dice il Vasari, l'artista dovette prolungare il soggiorno a Pesaro. Questa attribuzione è stata poi concordemente accolta da tutta la critica. Sull'elmo è stata aggiunta più tardi una scritta in greco, probabilmente un motto, interpretabile come: sarà certamente secondo ciò che mi sono proposto". La critica recente è propensa a ritenere originale anche il motto scritto in greco di Guidobaldo. Inoltre anche le iniziali D.G.B. confermano l'identità con il personaggio che è stato ritratto all'età di diciotto anni come conferma l'altra iscrizione dul bordo del tavolo" [1]
