Description

Showing close-up of inscription on the Angler's Tomb, or the gravestone of William Taylor (1793-1873), carved by his son Matthew Taylor. William was buried on the right hand side of the chapel in Woodhouse Cemetery, Leeds, West Yorkshire, but the gravestone has now been removed to the left hand side. The kingfisher is now missing from the top of the monument. The gravestone was named "Angler's Tomb" by Rev. W.T. Adey in 1905, in response to the images carved upon it.

The inscription says: "To the memory of William Taylor born at Grewelthorpe, died at Leeds May 24th 1873 in his 80th year. Also Hannah, wife of the above, born at Gildersome, died at Leeds, Augt 12th 1883, in her 83rd year. Also in loving memory of Lucy, their granddaughter, who died at Arthington, June 18th, 1906.
