Ancienne commune de Saint-Cassien. Donjon du XIVe-XVe siècles. Le donjon de Saint-Cassien occupe l'angle d'une cour fermée entourée de bâtiments. Cet ouvrage est construit sur une éminence qui commande la vallée de la Briande. Le donjon actuel a été édifié au XIVe siècle, il fait partie des donjons qui se sont élevés et qui ont été restaurés pendant la guerre de Cent ans. Ce donjon carré à contreforts cylindriques primitif a été agrandi de deux tours rondes accolées et a été remanié au XVe siècle. La tour nord a été refaite au XIXe siècle. Au XIIe siècle, le donjon de Saint-Cassien appartient à Philippe de Saint-Cassien. C'est Briand de Saint-Cassien qui le fait fortifier au début du XIIIe siècle, pour résister aux Anglais. Il passe ensuite aux Fontenay, aux Beauvau, puis au Cardinal de Richelieu qui aurait fait supprimer une tour d'angle et l'escalier. |
