| Description | Another caboose on display in the grounds of the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario in Smith's Falls, Canada. Note the raised look-out windows in that squared dome atop the car. The caboose, which formed the last car of a freight train in North America and Canada was both a home and an office on rails for railroad crew. Benches inside could be converted as bunks and ovens, ice boxes and water tanks were provided for the comfort of the crew. One brakes man would always sit in that raised look-out keeping a look out for fire or other problems along the train. In case there was a problem, he would pull a cord which would apply the brakes to stop the train. (Smith's Falls, Ontario, Canada, June 2015) |
